The LCS boys tennis team is coming off a winning record and their first trip to the MHSAA state tournament in school history last year and looking to continue to build the program this fall.
In the offseason, players have done volunteer work at Trinity Church, attended MSU tennis matches, and worked hard in tennis classes at the MAC over the winter. Over 30 players from LCS, Leslie, East Lansing, Haslett, and New Covenant Christian attended this summers LCS tennis camp. Isaac Haley won the camp tournament on the last day defeating the #1 player from East Lansing in the finals. Many current players have been doing clinics and private lessons this summer, and Will Combs won the sportsmanship award at the MSU Nike tennis camp.
Coach Haley expects over 17 players on the team this fall with a much tougher schedule. The team is pleased to add new assistant coach Gus Giltner for the upcoming season who played with world #2 Todd Martin and won an individual state championship at East Lansing, was top 90 in the country, and was captain and played #1 for Michigan State University. Gus also worked for Prince tennis and has run many of the top tennis programs in the state of Michigan. LCS will be hosting 2 tournaments this year that will be held on the campus of Michigan State University and Okemos HS. The team will be participating in the 1st annual Lansing vs Kalamazoo Cup and also will be playing a match on grass tennis courts in Detroit at the Wesson Lawn & Tennis Club vs Pontiac Notre Dame Prep.
If you have a player that will be on team or would like to learn more information about our tennis program, there is a parents meeting on Monday August 5th at 7pm at Kiwanis Park in Holt that you are welcome to attend. The first practice is Monday August 12th from 6-8pm. Contact Coach Matthew Haley at 740-823-1082 for additional information.
